Backcountry Skiing: Skills for Ski Touring and Ski Mountaineering (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert Series)

by: Martin Volken, Scott Schell, Margaret Wheeler
this book is like a small dictionary defining various aspects of skiing. It has the different types of skiing that can be done, along with the equipment that is neccessary for that type. The book shows various examples of bindings for tele skiing as an example. I have been wanting to get into ski mountaineering and this book helped me form an opinion on what type of skis i need to purchase and what further equipment or training i would need

Cross-Country Skiing: Building Skills for Fun and Fitness (Mountaineers Outdoor Expert)

by: Steve Hindman
Steve Hindman's book is an outstanding introduction to Nordic skiing. He starts from scratch, describing the types of skis and bindings, and showing you how to get started for the first time. He then gradually progresses to the more advanced techniques of efficient and enjoyable cross country skiing. I have been Nordic skiing for 26 years without much instruction, and I learned a lot from the book. I highly recommend it.

100 Classic Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Routes in Washington

by: Rainer Burgdorfer
Reading the other reviews of this book, I felt that people were ganging up on the author and that I just needed to chime in with my two cents worth. I believe this book to be far and away the best backcountry skiing/snowboarding guide available for Washington. These are the epic routes and memorable peaks that are the stuff of touring legend. I have found the route descriptions to be highly accurate and the maps to be fine for the purposes of illustration. After all, you should really have a full USGS or at least Green Trails map when you go into these areas anyways.

Front Range Descents: Spring and Summer Skiing and Snowboarding In Colorado's Front Range

by: Ron Haddad, Eileen Faughey
Ron has done a great job of documenting the best skiing on the front range. The photos and descriptions make route finding very easy, and he has opened up a vast recreation paradise for his readers. The early chapters on risk assessment, equipment and basic ski mountaineering knowledge are also very helpful. The only thing that I would change would be a more accurate description of the steepness of the slopes. The expert rating of from 35-50 degrees is a bit vague.
